Getting into the spirit of the holiday can be as easy as reviving an age-old tradition and giving it a personal twist. If you’re following me on Instagram you’ll see I’m always doing something either with a hot glue gun or my knitting needs. This year I decided to be a bit more rustic and create something meaningful with my needles.
The advent calendar, for example.
It’s great to get the Harry Potter or the candy-giving ones you can buy from the store, but the ones that really make a personal impact and create longer memories are the ones you can use year after year, and stuff with a variety of things!
After you finish here, be sure to check out my simple Citrus Garland post, and while you’re reading, warm up that oven!

Cute Materials to use for your DIY Advent Calendar
DIY the pockets and numbers, and create a festive décor for the 8 or 24 surprise gifts.
Buy or repurpose a canvas shoe bag. They sometimes have the perfect number of compartments, roomy enough for gifts, stuffed animals, candy, or whatever you can imagine.
I enjoy knitting, especially patch blankets, so using scarp pieces of yarn I have lying around looking at me I created my own advent calendar. Sometimes the naughty elf on the shelf pops into the pockets but hey it’s all in good fun!
Fun Advent Calendar Additions
For the numbers you embroider the number after knitting or you can iron on something really fun from your personal Cricut or silhouette.
Check the art supply store if you’re not into being that DIY, and if you celebrate Hanukkah, merely make eight pockets for your eight holiday nights.
Remember it’s all about creating new traditions with the old, and you don’t have to spend a lot of money, just enjoy yourself.
Thanks for stopping by and letting me share with you how you can create magic with the old and the new or simple from scratch to create a cozy and traditional Christmas that is perfectly you. I hope this inspires you this season-remember to create something that is giving off your “this is me vibes”.

Check out thrift stores for cute ideas you can gussy up with paper bags with cute numbers or ever with “mini” Santa sacks you can purchase at your local arts and crafts store.
